A Lunch to Remember
The celebration wasn’t just an event; it was a reflection of the spirit that Kyoshi Steve has inspired for decades. Friends, students, and instructors travelled from all over to share stories, show respect, and laugh at memories that are and is Kyoshi Steve.
The room was filled with energy, not the kind that comes from sparring or kata, but from connection. Every person there had been shaped, in some way, by Kyoshi’s guidance. From his patience in the early days of training to the quiet wisdom he shares in every class, it was clear: this was more than a 40th celebration. It was a tribute to a lifetime of influence.
When you talk about Kyoshi Steve, it’s hard to separate the man from the myth. To generations of martial artists, he’s been a teacher, mentor, and friend, and for one special Saturday, the Shuryu Dojo and Martial Arts community came together to celebrate everything he has given to the art, to the dojo, and to each of us.

From White Belt to Wisdom
The journey under Kyoshi Steve isn’t about belts or titles. It’s about growth.
Ask anyone who has trained with him, and they’ll tell you; he teaches more than technique. He teaches presence, discipline, and self-awareness. He has that rare ability to see potential before you do, and he never lets you give up on it.
As stories were shared during the lunch, one theme came through again and again: consistency. Kyoshi has been there, through every evolution of the dojo, every student’s first nervous bow, and every black belt grading that pushed someone past their own limits, including mine.
That is the real measure of mastery, not in how many students he’s trained, but how many lives he’s shaped.

Man, Mentor, and Martial Artist
It’s easy to call Kyoshi Steve a martial artist, but he’s so much more.
He’s a philosopher in motion, a mentor who reminds you that the hardest battles are often internal. His teaching goes beyond fighting, it’s about balance, respect, and understanding your own strength.
The day reminded us that Shuryu Dojo isn’t just a training space, it’s a community built on shared values. And at the centre of that community stands a man who has quietly led by example for over four decades.

Laughter, Legacy, and Lessons
There were plenty of light-hearted moments too. Photos from the early years sparked laughter (and a few groans at those interesting facial expressions). Old friends reconnected.
But the deeper thread of the day was legacy.
Legacy in the dojo. Legacy in the families who train together. Legacy in every student who teaches the next generation.
That ripple effect, the one Kyoshi started years ago, continues to expand on the Sunshine Coast with previous students now becoming club owners of their own. Ray and Cath with Mizuchi Dojo.

The Spirit of Shuryu
Every dojo has a heartbeat.
At Shuryu, that pulse is strong because it’s been built on respect, discipline, and care. The celebration wasn’t just about looking back; it was about recognising how those values continue to guide the future.
As Soke Brad said during his speech about Kyoshi Steve:
“Kyoshi doesn’t just turn up, he turns up for others, even when no-one arrives to class for training.”
And that’s a quality that makes him both man and myth.

Thank You, Kyoshi
To end the lunch, Kyoshi said “If I’ve got anything to say about it, definitely more will come”.
No words could fully express what he has given, to students, to the art, and to the community that surrounds him. But through every smile and every shared story, one message came through clearly:
Thank you, Kyoshi Steve. For everything.
________________________________________
The celebration reminded everyone that martial arts is about more than movement, it’s about belonging.
If you’ve ever thought about training, reconnecting, or finding your next challenge, Shuryu Dojo welcomes you.

At Shuryu Dojo, every grading tells a story.
As our Zen Do Kai students prepare for their black belt and 1st Degree black belt gradings, we are reminded that martial arts is about far more than the belt itself. The belt may be visible, but what it represents is the countless hours of training, the humility built in silence, and the strength discovered in moments of doubt.
For those attempting their first Zen Do Kai black belt, the test is not only about skill but about spirit. It takes years of dedication to reach this moment. The stances must be solid, the techniques sharp, the kata performed with both precision and feeling. Yet beneath all of this lies something greater: the persistence to keep showing up. To train through sore muscles, to repeat a movement until it becomes second nature, to bow onto the mat even on days when giving up would be easier.
For the student attempting their 1st Degree, the experience is different but no less demanding. The test shifts from achievement to refinement. It is no longer just about proving knowledge, it is about embodying the art itself. The higher ranks demand humility, patience, and the ability to inspire others by example. It means leading quietly, not for recognition, but because others are watching and learning what martial arts truly looks like in practice.
Black Belt is not the end.
Inside the dojo, we know that the black belt is not the end. It is the beginning of deeper learning, the moment where foundations are strong enough for real understanding to take root. Grading asks each student to stand before their peers, instructors, and tradition itself and declare, not through words but through movement: this is who I have become through martial arts.
Watching our students prepare reminds us that martial arts is measured in the unseen moments. The early afternoon practice when no one is there to applaud. The discipline of perfecting basics again and again. The courage to keep sparring when tiredness whispers “enough.” These are the quiet victories that make a grading possible.
As grading day approaches, pride swells in our dojo, not because of the belts that will be tied, but because of the people who have been shaped along the way. Their stories echo what we explored in our recent blog Why Martial Arts is the best thing you can do for yourself: that what happens on the mat has a way of shaping everything beyond it.
Every test deepens our understanding that martial arts is not about chasing rank, it is about growth, humility, and the community we build together.
So, when the belts are tied, black for the first time or marked with that next degree, the story won’t end. It will deepen. The path ahead will stretch on, asking for more patience, more humility, and more gratitude. And at Shuryu Dojo, that is exactly why we keep training.
“At Shuryu Dojo, every grading is a reminder that martial arts are about more than rank, it’s about growth, respect, and community. If you’d like to explore your own path in Zen Do Kai, whether you’re just beginning or looking to return to training, we’d love to welcome you onto the mat. Why do I say that?
When I first walked into a dojo, I had no idea how much martial arts would change my life. From the outside, it looked like just another fitness class. However, the truth is that martial arts is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Physically, mentally, and emotionally.
I want to share the journey many students experience when they step onto the mats for the first time, and why, in the end, it’s so much more than kicking and punching.
Finding Your Strength
Most people join martial arts for fitness, confidence, or self-defence. At first, it may feel like just a workout. But soon after, something deeper happens.
-
For example, you realise you’re capable of more than you thought.
-
Training builds not only muscles but also resilience.
-
As a result, every small victory in class shows up in everyday life.
The first time you break a sweat in class, you feel stronger. The first time you land a technique, you feel unstoppable. Eventually, these moments stack up and become the foundation of lasting confidence.
The Mental Shift
Martial arts isn’t only about moving your body, it’s about training your mind.
When students start, many are nervous, distracted, or even a little unsure of themselves. Over time, however, martial arts teaches you:
In fact, those lessons spill into work, relationships, and everyday challenges. Martial arts quietly rewires how you face the world.
Building Resilience Through Challenge
No one nails every technique the first time. On the other hand, that’s the point.
Martial arts creates a safe space to struggle, fail, and try again. Because of this, each challenge is an opportunity to grow stronger.
-
Falling teaches you how to rise.
-
Pressure teaches you how to stay calm.
-
In the same way, setbacks become stepping stones.
The dojo becomes a mirror: you see not just your body, but also your character growing.
A Community That Feels Like Family

One of the biggest surprises for new students is how martial arts brings people together. At the same time, the bonds often go far beyond training.
-
Training partners become teammates.
-
Instructors become mentors.
-
The dojo becomes a second home.
Because of this, it’s not just about learning skills; it’s about finding a place where you belong.
The Ripple Effect in Everyday Life
The real magic of martial arts is how it spills outside the dojo.
-
For instance, confidence at work grows when you know you can handle challenges.
-
Kids perform better at school because they learn focus and discipline.
-
Families bond when, together, parents and children train.
Martial arts doesn’t stop when class ends. Instead, it stays with you, shaping who you are long after you bow off the mats.
Why Start Now?
If you’ve ever thought about trying martial arts, the best time is now. You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or fearless to begin. Rather, you only need to take the first step.
At Shuryu Dojo, we’ve seen hundreds of people transform their lives, one class at a time. So, if you’re ready, it could be your turn.

If you’ve ever wondered which is the best martial art for self-defence, you’re not alone. Many people start their martial arts journey because they want to feel safer, stronger, and more confident in everyday life. While there are many styles to choose from, Krav Maga is designed specifically for real-world situations, making it one of the most effective self-defence systems available today.
Why People Ask: Which Martial Art Is Best for Self-Defence?
Choosing a martial art can feel overwhelming. With so many styles, Zen Do Kai, karate, judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, taekwondo, it’s easy to get lost. Each discipline has strengths, but when the goal is practical self-defence, the focus should be on what works quickly in unpredictable situations.
What Makes Krav Maga Different?
Krav Maga is not a sport. It was developed for the Israeli military and focuses on simple, effective movements anyone can learn. Unlike traditional martial arts that involve competitions, rituals, or scoring points, Krav Maga teaches you how to:
React under stress
Defend against common street attacks
Use your body’s natural movements for quick responses
Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid danger before it starts
Comparing Krav Maga with Other Martial Arts:
Karate & Taekwondo: Great for discipline, balance, and striking. But they often require years of practice before skills translate to real-world defence.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Excellent for ground fighting and control, especially if you’re smaller. However, most street situations involve multiple attackers where being on the ground can be risky.
Boxing & Muay Thai: Powerful striking and fitness training, but less emphasis on defending against weapons or surprise attacks.
Zen Do Kai: Comes in a close second with Kicks, punches, and self-defence techniques. Great for all occasions and ages from 5 up.
Krav Maga: Designed for real life. It blends strikes, escapes, and defensive tactics against both armed and unarmed attackers.
How Long Does It Take to Learn Self-Defence With Krav Maga?
The beauty of Krav Maga is that you don’t need years of training before you feel safer. Students often notice a boost in confidence after only a few classes. With regular training, you quickly develop practical skills you can use right away if needed.
Why Krav Maga Fits Into Everyday Life
Self-defence isn’t just about fighting. It’s about prevention and awareness. Krav Maga trains you to:
Stay alert in public – Protect loved ones in risky situations -Build fitness, strength, and confidence – Keep calm under pressure.
At Shuryu Dojo, our classes are structured to suit beginners and experienced martial artists alike. The goal is not perfection—it’s preparation.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Krav Maga suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. You don’t need any martial arts background. The techniques are simple and designed to be picked up quickly.
- What age can I learn Krav Maga?
At Shuryu Dojo, we teach anyone above the age of 16 in a safe, supportive way that builds confidence, awareness, and respect.
- Do I need to be fit before starting?

Not at all. Krav Maga classes will build your fitness as you go. You’ll get stronger, fitter, and more confident each week.

My Story.
When I first stepped onto the mats in my late 40s, I had the same thoughts many people do: Am I too old? Too unfit? Too likely to get injured? These doubts are common, but here’s the truth, starting martial arts later in life isn’t a limitation, it’s an opportunity.

Pushed hard and got through.
Starting Zen Do Kai in My 40s
I began training in Zen Do Kai in my late 40s. At the time, my biggest worries were fitness, flexibility, and injury. Like many people, I had the thought in the back of my mind: What if I hurt myself and it keeps me out of work? But I walked through the dojo doors anyway.
To my surprise, I immediately felt at home. People came up, introduced themselves, and made me feel welcome. It wasn’t intimidating, it was supportive. I didn’t have a sudden “I can do this” moment. Instead, I just kept showing up. And that consistency changed everything.

Balck belt, Black Gi. 1st Degree grading end of 2025.
The Benefits I’ve Gained
Since starting martial arts, my fitness is stronger than it’s ever been (I’m not Olympic-ready, but I’m far ahead of where I was). More importantly, my mindset has shifted. Training has taught me to keep moving forward, to challenge myself, and to face life head-on.
The biggest boost? Confidence. The self-defense training in Zen Do Kai has given me a quiet assurance that carries into every part of my life.
Of course, setbacks happen. I’ve had a shoulder repair and a bicep insertion point changed along the way. But honestly, who’s to say those things wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t trained? The difference is martial arts gave me the tools and resilience to keep pushing forward.

Helping with the kids and teenagers’ program.
Advice If You’re Hesitating
If you’re worried you’re too old or unfit, my advice is simple: just give it a try. Walk into a club and see who’s there. If everyone’s in their 20s doing flips, maybe it’s not the right fit. But at Shuryu Dojo, we have plenty of students in their 40s and beyond, people just like you.
Why Shuryu Dojo is Different
At Shuryu, we understand what it’s like to be a beginner because we’ve all been there. I remember what it felt like to walk through the doors for the first time, and I make sure every new student feels as welcome as I did.
Whether you’re in your 20s, 40s, 60s or beyond, martial arts can be a life-changing journey. You don’t need to be the fittest or the youngest in the room, you just need the courage to take the first step.
